Building Collaborative Partnerships
SafeEnviro partners with Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to pioneer West Africa’s first waste management academy
One of the most populated nations in Africa with over 170 million people, Nigeria is also one of the largest producers of solid waste in the region - generating more than 32 million tons annually; out of which only 20-30% is collected. Solid waste management is possibly the most demanding environmental challenge faced by the country, despite strictly imposed policies and regulations. The buzzing heart of Nigeria, Lagos State is the nation's largest urban area and commercial hub with over 21 million people. It also generates over 10,000 tons of urban waste on a daily basis.

The buzzing heart of Nigeria, Lagos State is the nation's largest urban area and commercial hub with over 21 million people. It also generates over 10,000 tons of urban waste on a daily basis.
Identifying the growing need for effective waste control, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) was established in 1977. The first of its kind in West Africa, the responsibility of environmental sanitation, domestic refuse collection and disposal in Lagos State comes under its purview. LAWMA continues to set standards for waste management in Nigeria as a role model for the other states. Further recognising the need for education to manage and utilise waste more effectively, the Lagos State Government enlisted the support of UK’s No. 1 waste management company SafeEnviro as one of their key partners.
To meet the need for quality education in waste management practices, laws and regulations, the LAWMA Academy was launched on the 15th of September 2020. The first of its kind in Nigeria (and in West Africa), the Academy serves as a centre of expertise in the development and implementation of sustainable waste management solutions. A knowledge hub for instruction and certification, it is set to raise the next generations of scholars and entrepreneurs specialising in the sector. The partnership with SafeEnviro was forged to strengthen the offering further, drawing upon their considerable resource of expertise and experience.
A fully-fledged environmental services company operating in the UK, SafeEnviro helps communities, corporates, and schools to successfully manage and divert waste to be used in a beneficial way. This is enabled through their fully integrated facility incorporating solid waste disposal, compost production and recycling operations. As well as a range of collection services, SafeEnviro also offer contract management, education, and consultancy. Extending support as consultants SafeEnviro will work closely with the Lagos State Government to improve waste practices, help execute projects effectively as well as provide industry expertise and facilities.
Speaking at the launch of the LAWMA Academy, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State Dr Obafemi Hamzat commented that this was an initiative aimed at making Lagos a safer, cleaner place to live in. Expressing appreciation of the collaboration forged with SafeEnviro he stated “…we would also like to thank SafeEnviro who we would be partnering with…” A spokesperson from SafeEnviro commented that “…we strongly believe that education holds the key to addressing waste management issues in the long term and we are proud to be a part of this pioneering effort in West Africa and lend our expertise to this venture.”
The power of tech partnership
As the digital era continues to evolve, strategic IT partnerships will only become more important. For SafeEnviro the benefits of having a tech company play a partner role, whereby IT specialists can actively collaborate with the wider team and help inform business and technology strategy, can be considerable.
But it’s not just a one-way street. Forming a mutually beneficial partnership with an innovative technology company, Adage Digital, has helped us grow, assure longevity, encouraged innovation and at the same achieving all these by fostering communication and trust. Quality collaborations can help improve everything from how a company communicates right through to profitable revenue, in short, enabling both companies to achieve more than they ever could going it alone.
The key to any successful partnership is, first and foremost, finding the right company to join forces with. At the very least, Adage Digital being an IT partner has been able to serve our business needs, ensure optimum IT performance, and has also been able to meet any emerging challenges head-on.
